The History of the Ravenna Oil Company

For seven decades, the Ravenna Oil Company, headquartered at 102 E. Lake St. in Ravenna, has set the standard as the premier petroleum marketer in Portage County and surrounding areas by marketing only high quality products and services.

Established in 1931 by Raymond J. Wise, the 77-year-old company is now operated by his grandson Jed. Jed has been in the business for 30 years.

Ravenna Oil's proud heritage includes being the first distributor of petroleum products in Portage County. Mr. Ray Wise sold his products to farmers and small businessmen in the County and delivered gasoline in five-gallon buckets in the 1930's. During World War II in 1941, Ravenna Oil Company was the local oil supplier for contractors constructing the Ravenna Arsenal. In 1943, Ravenna Oil Company signed on with Mobil Oil Corp. to supply its fuels and continued until 1993 when Mobil Oil Corp. pulled its distillates and gasoline supply out of Ohio.

Ravenna Oil Company still has a full line of Mobil motor oils and lubricants along with Citgo branded oils and lubricants, many other petroleum related products are also available. The comapny now handles valero gasoline branded.

In 1956 a Burner Service department was established. The Burner Service department includes a full parts department, fuel oil tanks, furnaces, flame retention replacement burners, and oil fired hot water tanks. Two full-time technicians with radio operated trucks service our customers.

The main reason Ravenna Oil Company operates an oil heating service department is to fully take care of its customers equipment. The technicians are fully trained to work on oil heating equipment. Our staff understands that oil heat is a safe, clean and very efficient way to heat your home and water.

Two years ago, Ravenna Oil introduced a new product, Dust Bond, a high-performance dust suppressant that is environmentally safe. Several area businesses have used this product with good results. Future plans include expanding commercial fuels and an industrial and truck engine oils department.

Jed Wise believes the success of the company can be attributed to an excellent staff of drivers, office help, service technicians and retail sales people. They're a very dedicated group of people. We appreciate the patronage of our customers and we look forward to continuing to serve theirs needs.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Weekdays. Closed Saturdays during the summer.
